JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Students in Lynette Smiley's classroom love their teachers.

The 8-year teaching veteran credits success in her classroom to team teaching with Ms. Angela Vaesa.

"We really feed off each other and work well together," Smiley said. "She's a very positive
...more teacher."

"They're awesome, like if Ms. Vaesa's teaching, Ms. Smiley will come in and she'll think of something and she'll have like a connection to what Ms. Vaesa's teaching," said student Ashlin Green.

Smiley is very involved in the school, with an extensive list of extras like offering homework assistance twice a week. She also works with safety patrols and the leadership team.

Smiley said "love" sums up her personal teaching philosophy.

"A lot of these kids don't get a lot of love," Smiley said. "I feel like if you can incorporate love into your classroom as much as possible, then these kids will want to learn for you, they'll want to be here."

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Duval County's graduation rate took a hit following the calculation of federal rules now being used to determine the percentage of students who graduate in four years.

In December, the Florida Department of Education released statewide numbers that put the
...more state's graduation rate at 80%, but the federal calculation drops the number to 70%.

The federal graduation rate counts students who receive standard diplomas within four years.  The state had counted students who received special diplomas.

In Duval County the calculation change resulted in an 8% drop with the federal formula lowering the graduation rate to 63%. In December, the state graduation figure gave Duval its highest percentage ever with 71%.

Duval County school board chairperson Betty Burney was not upset with the federal formula.

"I think what they are trying to do is get everybody uniform," said Burney.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Do you pick up after your pet?  There's a company that's making a living off catching you not cleaning up your dog's mess, and they want to expand to Jacksonville.

Apartment and townhome complex managers are constantly battling to find out who doesn't clean up
...more after their pets.  If you don't clean up the mess, Bio Pet Vet Lab said their poo prints program will catch you.

"That's done through a simple cheek swab. They just swab the cheeks of the pet, send us the sample to the lab, and we process them," Eric Mayer of Bio Pet Vet Lab said.

That is, of course, if a dog owner agrees to give that kind of access to their pets DNA.  Some complexes require pet registry before you move in.

"We make a match, then the property owner can consult the pet owner," Mayer said.

"I initially thought it was a good idea," Andy Narin of First Coast Scoopers said.  Narin cleans up after nearly 500 dogs per week, so he knows about
