ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- This is to advise that there has been increased mosquito-borne disease activity in areas of St. Johns County.  Several sentinel chickens have tested positive for West Nile virus.  The risk of transmission to humans has been increased.

Sentinel chickens test positive for West Nile

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- The St. Johns County Health Department has sent a mosquito-borne illness advisory after several sentinel chickens tested positive for West Nile. A positive test result in sentinel chickens indicates an increased risk of transmission to humans.

The health...more department is advising residents to do their best to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes.

The Anastasia Mosquito Control District and the health department are continuing surveillance and prevention efforts, according to the advisory.

The health department uses the "Drain and Cover" method to help remind people how to protect yourself from mosquitoes.

DRAIN standing water to stop mosquitoes from multiplying:

Drain water from garbage cans, house gutters, buckets, pool covers, coolers, toys, flower pots or any other containers where sprinkler or rain water has collected.

ST. JOHNS, Fla. -- Steve Bielicki woke up to quite a surprise this morning when he was greeted by a black bear in his pool enclosure.

The bear was inside, then on top of, the enclosure before landing on a covered hot tub and jumping a fence and going back into the woods.

This...more bear, or one just like it was also spotted running across the lawn at Julington Creek Elementary School today, according to Joy Hill, the Public Information Coordinator for the Northeast Region of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

Other sightings reported of this or a similar bear have included the first hole of the Champions Club Golf Course; Elmwood Drive on the north side of Race Track Road. Yesterday, a bear was spotted at Garrison Drive in Southhampton Golf and Country Club off County Road 210, according to Hill.
